Advertising and a few good articles.

I thought about what I should write next and advertising & marketing is a big topic. I have shared my views through various social media posts and tweets but I have never really written an expanded in-depth article on those views. Even this inspired article is just a small part of it all. There are many views shared by experts and influential industry folks on what is wrong and what is right with the Advertising & Marketing industry and I’ve spent a few weeks reading various articles and gathering my thoughts on these issues.

The majority is never right

I rewatched Death to 2020 and Death to 2021 on Netflix earlier today… I actually finished Death to 2021 moments ago, and I anxiously had George’s article open on my mobile waiting to read it. — Encourage innovation. Change is our lifeblood, stagnation our death knell. Quotations of David Ogilvy — Ogilvy 75 I watch a variety of stimulating content on the TV, at least I think they are. From true stories in the form of movies to documentaries, well-written comedies and dramas, but there are…

“Start each day as a beginner”

“Start each day as a beginner” I am not sure I have the wording correct, it was a long time ago that I saw them shared on Twitter by Tham Khai Meng, words that stuck with me on the philosophy of constant learning. — Learning is never-ending whether we want to like it or not, the stoics believe change is problematic for us, humans, because we struggle with letting go, change induces pain because we are holding on and hoping it won’t happen. I suppose that depends on the context of the change, I…

What’s best?

I no longer ask “What’s new?”, I ask “What’s best? — New is a constant reality, in many ways, it’s a singularity though it’s always happening. — What’s best goes deep, it induces imperative questions about life and work, it is the skeptic, perhaps a stoic… It requires criticism and critical thinking about all things that try to enter our space. …

The problem of AI: What we thought we needed

Every good story has the right amount of tension, conflict, and dissonance. But mostly irony. Humans are prone to many things, mistakes being a prevalent one… I am not saying AI (artificial intelligence) is a mistake, but admiration for the irony cannot be helped. However, we do not seem to know what to do with it. Conversations have not begun to dig deep enough into this mysterious tool, some argue in favour of it, and others argue against it. There is a lot of minutiae, it’s a mysterious jewel excavated from some unknown mountain very few had the privilege of climbing.

Soundscape & Brands

The sound of a chip bag was not random, and neither was the sound of a bottle cap. There is a selection process that takes place that includes the search for stable, secure, and pleasant-sounding materials for packaging. — Some time ago on Club House, I was engaged in a conversation about sound engineering. This intriguing conversation had me share about the world of packaging and sound. …

Are you lucky?

“The dynamics of great creativity are often dependent on the dynamic of our reality, the impact of the challenges we face. A client once told me if it’s a problem he’s not necessarily interested, if you exchange a problem with “we have a situation” he feels better. From his perspective, a situation can be solved, but a problem isn’t necessarily solvable… — Whether or not he’s correct didn’t matter to me, because it reminded me of something Dave Trott said, changing problems into challenges you can solve. This is achieved by changing the perspective and looking at things from different viewpoints.

The beautiful things

“To do the useful thing, to say the courageous thing, to contemplate the beautiful thing: that is enough for one man’s life.” — T.S. Eliot — The above was copied from a tweet by Carolyn Barclay (@yesnoum)— I am somewhere there, with the beautiful things. As I sat outside the hotel lobby, I started thinking about a lot of things… I had left home to have a drink, but being by yourself tends to induce a…

The ephemeral nature of things

We arrived at what is intended to be a two-day break of relaxation and refreshing the soul and the mind. I was supposed to have been here alone, but I did not trust myself, I needed a support system… — I invited some close friends to come with me, but they were not able to. Another close friend was coming to visit Jamaica and asked if he could stay with me while on the island, I said absolutely — There is something interesting about pain, I was hurting, and he…
